How we verify

California Assisted Living Index is compiled from public records, not from who paid to be listed.

• CDSS Community Care Licensing: Care Facility Search — The state's public record of licensed facilities, inspection reports and complaint findings.
• CHHS Open Data: Community Care Licensing Facilities — The open-data facility file (May 2025 extract) with names, licensee, administrator, capacity and first license date.
• CDSS Community Care Licensing facility layer (ArcGIS) — The current roster of open facilities with capacity, phone and address, refreshed by CDSS.

We combine two public CDSS data sources: the Community Care Licensing open-data file for Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (the May 2025 extract) and the current CDSS facility layer, which lists facilities that are open today with capacity, address and phone.

A facility gets the Licensed (CDSS) badge only when CDSS data shows a licensed status. Any other status, such as probationary or pending, is shown as a plain fact with the source and date, never as a badge and never as a conclusion about the facility.

Facilities marked closed in the open-data file are left out. We do not use the state's inspection or complaint data on this site; every listing links to the state's Care Facility Search page where those records live.

Capacity is the licensed maximum, not the current number of residents. Size categories: board and care is 6 or fewer, mid-size is 7 to 49, large is 50 or more.

Order within a city: larger licensed capacity first, then alphabetical. Featured listings appear in a separate, labelled box and never change that order.

What a badge means

Licensed (CDSS): California Department of Social Services Community Care Licensing lists the facility as licensed. The badge only says the license is in good standing in the data we hold; it is not a quality rating. We only publish positive matches. A listing without a badge is not an accusation — most gaps are name variations between registries.

Freshness

Data was last refreshed on 2026-09-30. CDSS updates its facility data continuously; we re-load it regularly.
